Signal Distribution & Amplifiers

For pubs, guesthouses and big homes: the head-end that keeps signal strong across many outlets — and the thing that fails all of them at once.

Every split, every connector and every metre of cable costs you signal. On a single-TV house that is irrelevant; across a guesthouse with fourteen rooms it is the entire engineering problem. A distribution system exists to deliver adequate signal to the worst outlet in the building, not the best one.

Amplifiers: the right amount, in the right place

An amplifier compensates for distribution loss — but it amplifies noise along with signal, so more gain is not better. Too much and you overdrive the decoder tuners and get pixelation that looks exactly like too little signal. This is the fault we are most often called in to correct on somebody else's installation: a well-meant amplifier turned up until it made things worse. Correct practice is to calculate the loss, apply matching gain, and verify at the furthest outlet with a meter.

DiSEqC switches

Where a system receives more than one satellite, a DiSEqC switch selects between them on command from the decoder. They are reliable until they are not, and when one fails you typically lose an entire group of channels — the ones on the satellite you can no longer reach — while everything else carries on working. That specific symptom is close to diagnostic.

Designing rather than extending

Most failing commercial systems were never designed; they grew, one improvised split at a time. Where that has happened we will say so and quote to re-do the head-end properly, because chasing faults through an undocumented system costs more over two years than rebuilding it once.

Brands we fit and service

The signal distribution & amplifiers market splits into hardware built for South African conditions and lookalikes that fail at the first hard season. These are the manufacturers we trust on our installations:

  • Triax
  • Inverto
  • Ellies distribution amplifiers

See our brand guides for how these manufacturers compare.

When the signal distribution & amplifiers goes wrong

These are the failures we're called to most often — each with its symptoms, causes and our fix on the dedicated problems page:

  • Weak signal across several TVsE30 (intermittent) — Every TV in a larger property shows some pixelation, worse on the outlets furthest from the head-end and worse on certai…
  • A whole group of channels disappeared — One coherent block of channels has vanished from every TV in the property while everything else continues to work normal…
  • Amplifier turned up too high — Pixelation across all outlets that got worse rather than better after an amplifier was fitted or adjusted upward.
