The decoder is where the signal finally becomes television. It tunes the transponder your channel lives on, checks your smart card entitlement, decrypts the stream and outputs it over HDMI. Everything before it (dish, LNB, cable) is plumbing; everything after it is your TV.
The current range
- Explora Ultra — satellite plus built-in streaming apps, 4K-capable, and the model most new premium installations use.
- Explora 2 / 3 — the recording workhorses. An internal hard drive holds your recordings, and that drive is the part that eventually wears out.
- HD Decoder (DSD 1131) — no recording, no frills, extremely reliable. The sensible choice for a second room.
- Streama — internet-only, no dish at all. Worth knowing about, because it is sometimes a better answer than a difficult roof.
What genuinely goes wrong
Power supplies fail after years of load-shedding surges. Explora hard drives develop bad sectors and start failing recordings before they fail outright. HDMI ports go intermittent. Software updates occasionally leave a box in a reboot loop. And a great many "decoder faults" turn out to be nothing of the sort — the decoder is faithfully reporting that it has no usable signal from the dish, which is a roof problem wearing a decoder's error message.
The honest diagnostic order
We check signal quality at the decoder input first, before condemning any box. It takes two minutes with a meter and it is the difference between a R450 realignment and an unnecessary decoder replacement.
Brands we fit and service
The decoder (explora / hd) market splits into hardware built for South African conditions and lookalikes that fail at the first hard season. These are the manufacturers we trust on our installations:
- DStv (MultiChoice)
- OpenView
- StarSat
See our brand guides for how these manufacturers compare.
When the decoder (explora / hd) goes wrong
These are the failures we're called to most often — each with its symptoms, causes and our fix on the dedicated problems page:
- Decoder will not switch on — No standby light, no front-panel display, no response to the remote or to the buttons on the box itself. Completely dead…
- E16 error — channel not authorisedE16 — A specific channel or group of channels shows an E16 message, while other channels continue to work perfectly.
- E30 error — no signal being receivedE30 — An E30 message reporting that no signal is reaching the decoder from the dish. Usually every channel is affected.
- Explora recordings fail or the box freezes — Recordings do not complete or vanish from the list, the box slows down and freezes, playback stutters, and the decoder r…
- Decoder keeps restarting in a loop — The decoder boots part-way, shows the start-up screen, then restarts — over and over, never reaching live TV.
- Decoder on but no picture on the TVHDCP error — The decoder's front panel shows it is on and responding, but the TV displays "No signal" or a black screen. Sometimes so…
- Decoder overheating and freezing — The decoder is hot to the touch, freezes or reboots after an hour or two of use, and behaves perfectly again once it has…
