The smart card carries your entitlement: which package you pay for, and therefore which channels the decoder is allowed to decrypt. It is paired to a specific decoder, and that pairing is part of why swapping boxes between houses rarely works the way people expect.
Card errors, decoded
- E48-32 — the decoder cannot read the card or cannot see the signal it needs to authorise it. Despite the name, this one is very often a dish fault rather than a card fault.
- E16 — the subscription is not currently active for that channel or package.
- E141 / E142 — pairing and activation issues between card and decoder.
What we can and cannot do
Being straight about this saves everyone a wasted callout: we are an independent installer, not MultiChoice. We cannot pay your account, activate a subscription or re-issue a card. What we can do is clean and reseat the card, confirm the decoder is reading it, verify the signal is strong enough for authorisation to complete, and tell you definitively whether the problem is on your roof or on your account — so you stop paying for callouts that were never going to fix it.
Care
Leave it in. Every removal risks the gold contacts and every reinsertion is a chance to seat it wrong. Cards do not need periodic removal, despite the folklore.
Brands we fit and service
The smart card market splits into hardware built for South African conditions and lookalikes that fail at the first hard season. These are the manufacturers we trust on our installations:
- DStv (MultiChoice)
- OpenView
See our brand guides for how these manufacturers compare.
When the smart card goes wrong
These are the failures we're called to most often — each with its symptoms, causes and our fix on the dedicated problems page:
- Smart card not detectedE48-32, E141 — The decoder reports that no card is inserted, or cannot read the card, despite the card being physically in the slot.
- Card and decoder not pairedE141, E142 — An E141 or E142 message about pairing or activation, usually right after a decoder swap, a house move, or moving a card …
- Subscription shows as inactiveE16, E48-32 — Channels that used to work now show an error saying the subscription is not active, often across the whole package at on…
- Damaged or worn smart cardE48-32, E141 — Intermittent card errors that come and go, often improving briefly after the card is removed and reinserted, and worseni…
