Every fault below comes from real call-outs across Durban and surrounding areas. Some have a quick check you can try yourself before booking anyone — where that's true, we say so. When a visit is needed, the diagnosis is done with a signal meter, quoted before work starts, and covered by our 12-month workmanship warranty. New to this part? Start with the smart card component guide.
1. Smart card not detectedE48-32, E141
What you'll see: The decoder reports that no card is inserted, or cannot read the card, despite the card being physically in the slot.
Why it happens: The card is in the wrong way round, not fully seated, has dirty or worn gold contacts, or — less often — the card reader inside the decoder has failed.
How we fix it: We reseat and clean the card properly, verify the reader is detecting it, and establish whether the fault is the card, the reader or the signal path that authorisation depends on.
2. Card and decoder not pairedE141, E142
What you'll see: An E141 or E142 message about pairing or activation, usually right after a decoder swap, a house move, or moving a card between boxes.
Why it happens: The smart card is registered to a different decoder. Cards and decoders are paired, so a card moved into another box will not authorise until the pairing is updated on the account.
How we fix it: We confirm the hardware and signal are sound so pairing can complete, and tell you clearly which part is ours to fix and which part needs a call to MultiChoice — because the pairing itself is an account action, not an installation one.
3. Subscription shows as inactiveE16, E48-32
What you'll see: Channels that used to work now show an error saying the subscription is not active, often across the whole package at once.
Why it happens: The account is genuinely unpaid or suspended, a payment has not reflected yet, or the entitlement update has not reached the decoder because it has been switched off or has poor signal.
How we fix it: We separate the two possibilities definitively: if the decoder has good signal and has been on long enough to refresh, the problem is on the account and no installer can fix it. If signal is marginal, that is our job and we fix it.
4. Damaged or worn smart cardE48-32, E141
What you'll see: Intermittent card errors that come and go, often improving briefly after the card is removed and reinserted, and worsening over time.
Why it happens: Physical wear on the gold contacts from repeated removal, or damage from bending, heat, moisture or a cleaning attempt with alcohol or an abrasive.
How we fix it: We confirm whether the card or the reader is at fault by substitution, and advise you accordingly — a worn card needs replacing through MultiChoice, which is a quick errand rather than an installation job.
Symptom doesn't match any of these?
Faults overlap — a "smart card problem" is sometimes another link in the chain wearing a disguise. Describe what your system is doing on 069 507 6822 (or WhatsApp a photo of the error screen) and we'll tell you which component it actually sounds like, free, before anything is booked.
