An aircon moves heat, and to move heat it has to move air — across the indoor coil to cool the room, and across the outdoor coil to dump that heat outside. Two fans do that work, and they fail in quite different ways.
The indoor blower
The indoor unit uses a long cylindrical blower wheel rather than a conventional fan blade. Its many small vanes pack with dust and biofilm over years, which unbalances the wheel and cuts airflow badly. The symptoms are weak output, a rattle or wobble at certain speeds, and often a smell. Bearings dry out and squeal. A blower wheel that has never been cleaned can lose a large share of its designed airflow while appearing to run normally.
The outdoor fan
The outdoor fan is exposed to weather, dust and, near the sea, salt. Motors seize, blades crack after UV exposure, and the fan capacitor fails in the same way the compressor one does. An outdoor unit whose fan is not turning will run for a short while and then trip on high pressure, because heat has nowhere to go.
What we check
Airflow at the indoor grille, current draw against the motor rating, bearing condition by hand and by sound, blade and wheel condition, and the fan capacitor. Where the wheel is simply dirty, cleaning restores performance without any parts at all.
Brands we fit and service
The fan motor & blower wheel market splits into hardware built for South African conditions and lookalikes that fail at the first hard season. These are the manufacturers we trust on our installations:
- Samsung
- LG
- Midea
- Hisense
- Daikin
- Alliance
- Defy
See our brand guides for how these manufacturers compare.
When the fan motor & blower wheel goes wrong
These are the failures we're called to most often — each with its symptoms, causes and our fix on the dedicated problems page:
- Rattling or wobbling noise from the indoor unit — A rattle, wobble or vibration from the indoor unit that changes with fan speed, often alongside noticeably weaker airflo…
- Outdoor fan not turning and unit cutting out — The outdoor unit starts, the compressor runs briefly, and then everything shuts down. The fan blade is stationary or tur…
