Troubleshooting guide

Common Fan Motor & Blower Wheel problems

The 2 failures our Durban technicians meet most often — what you'll see, why it happens, and how we fix it properly.

Every fault below comes from real call-outs across Durban and surrounding areas. Some have a quick check you can try yourself before booking anyone — where that's true, we say so. When a visit is needed, the diagnosis is done with a signal meter, quoted before work starts, and covered by our 12-month workmanship warranty. New to this part? Start with the fan motor & blower wheel component guide.

1. Rattling or wobbling noise from the indoor unit

What you'll see: A rattle, wobble or vibration from the indoor unit that changes with fan speed, often alongside noticeably weaker airflow than the unit once had.

Why it happens: Dust and biofilm packed unevenly into the vanes of the blower wheel, throwing it out of balance. Dry or worn bearings produce a squeal rather than a rattle.

How we fix it: We clean the blower wheel properly rather than just the visible grille, check the bearings by hand and by current draw, and re-measure airflow at the grille afterwards to confirm the unit is back to its designed output.

2. Outdoor fan not turning and unit cutting out

What you'll see: The outdoor unit starts, the compressor runs briefly, and then everything shuts down. The fan blade is stationary or turns only if nudged.

Why it happens: A failed fan capacitor, a seized fan motor, or a cracked blade. With no airflow across the condenser the system cannot reject heat and trips on high pressure protection within minutes.

How we fix it: We test the fan capacitor first, check motor current and bearing condition, and inspect the blade for cracks or UV damage. Running the system with a dead outdoor fan risks the compressor, so this is not a fault to leave.

Symptom doesn't match any of these?

Faults overlap — a "fan motor & blower wheel problem" is sometimes another link in the chain wearing a disguise. Describe what your system is doing on 069 507 6822 (or WhatsApp a photo of the error screen) and we'll tell you which component it actually sounds like, free, before anything is booked.
