Decoder (Explora / HD) troubleshooting

Decoder overheating and freezing

What you'll notice

The decoder is hot to the touch, freezes or reboots after an hour or two of use, and behaves perfectly again once it has cooled down overnight.

Why it happens

Inadequate ventilation. Decoders — Exploras especially, with a hard drive spinning inside — generate real heat, and a great many live in a closed cabinet or stacked under other equipment with nowhere for that heat to go.

The signature here is unmistakable and rules out almost everything else: it works when cold and fails when warm. A failing component does not usually recover overnight.

Why it matters beyond the annoyance

Heat is what kills the two most expensive parts of the box. Hard drives have a well-documented relationship between running temperature and lifespan, and electrolytic capacitors in the power supply degrade faster the hotter they run. So a decoder that merely freezes occasionally this summer is a decoder that fails permanently a year or two sooner than it should.

Where the heat gets trapped

  • Closed TV cabinets with a solid back and no ventilation — by far the most common.
  • Stacked equipment, with a router, soundbar or games console sitting directly on top of the decoder.
  • Dust blocking the vents, which is a five-minute fix that people rarely think to do.
  • Direct sun falling on the box for part of the afternoon.

What actually fixes it

Clear space above and behind the unit — a few centimetres genuinely changes the outcome. If it has to live in a cabinet, that cabinet needs ventilation, which usually means removing the back panel or cutting a vent. Where neither is possible, a quiet USB-powered cabinet fan costs very little and works.

Ruling out the alternatives

Freezing and rebooting can also come from a failing power supply or a dying hard drive. The temperature correlation is what separates them — but if you are not certain, we would rather check than have you rearrange your lounge for nothing.

How we fix it

We relocate the decoder somewhere with genuine airflow, or ventilate the cabinet it has to live in, and confirm the fault is thermal rather than a failing power supply or drive.

Still not working?

If the checks above haven't restored your decoder (explora / hd), this usually needs a technician. Our Decoder Installation & Setup service covers exactly this fault — from R350, quoted upfront.
