What you'll notice
No standby light, no front-panel display, no response to the remote or to the buttons on the box itself. Completely dead.
Why it happens
Most often a failed power supply — the component most damaged by load-shedding switching surges. Sometimes a failed wall adapter, a tripped protection circuit, or a dead wall socket rather than the decoder at all.
A completely dead decoder is at least an unambiguous fault — no guessing about signal strength or channel lists.
Check these first, at no cost
- Test the wall socket with something else. Surge-protected multiplugs fail silently and remarkably often, and a tripped one looks exactly like a dead decoder.
- Try a different power adapter if you have a compatible one. External bricks fail far more often than the boxes they power.
- Unplug at the wall for two full minutes, then reconnect. Protection circuits sometimes latch and need a genuine power-down to release.
Load shedding is the underlying cause
Years of switching transients are hard on switch-mode power supplies. The damage is cumulative rather than dramatic — capacitors degrade, and one day the box does not come back. This is why we recommend a decent surge-protected outlet, or better a small UPS, on every installation we do. It is a modest cost against a decoder replacement, and the UPS has the pleasant side effect of keeping the box online through short outages so it does not have to re-acquire everything afterwards.
Repair or replace
For most decoders, board-level repair is not economic against replacement cost. Where the unit is under a MultiChoice arrangement, that swap-out route is usually better value than anything we could do, and we will say so rather than quoting you for work you should not buy.
How we fix it
We confirm power is actually reaching the decoder, test the supply, and separate an external power fault from an internal one. Where the decoder itself has failed we tell you plainly whether replacement or a MultiChoice swap-out is the better route.
Still not working?
If the checks above haven't restored your decoder (explora / hd), this usually needs a technician. Our Decoder Installation & Setup service covers exactly this fault — from R350, quoted upfront.
